A desire for a career change saw Gareth Chandler retrain as an educator and find a passion for literacy intervention. Now a Senior Tutor at the Macquarie Park MultiLit Literacy Centre, Gareth plays a vital role in both tutoring students and mentoring new staff. He finds deep fulfillment in helping children overcome literacy challenges, believing strongly that it’s never too late to rebuild the foundations of reading and writing.
Meet Gareth
I began working at MultiLit in 2013 after a mid-career change into education. Previously I worked in various roles within the corporate and small business sectors. Whilst completing my Grad DipEd at Macquarie Uni, I learned of the great work being done by MultiLit and applied for a role as a casual Literacy Tutor.

My original intention with my career change had been to apply my business experience to become a High School Commerce/Business Studies teacher but working with our students at MultiLit proved to be so rewarding that here I am nearly 12 years later!
Why do you enjoy being a Senior Tutor at MultiLit Literacy Centres?
As a Senior Tutor I assess and tutor some of our students directly, while at the same time training and assisting our new tutors to ensure they settle into their roles and follow the MultiLit methodology in the delivery of our direct instruction programs. I also enjoy talking to our parents and providing them with key feedback on the progress of their children.
What do you wish more people understood about learning to read, literacy or education?
Every child that comes to our centres has a slightly different ‘literacy profile’ but the core principles of our approach stay the same, and the results achieved can be life changing for our students and their concerned parents. Whilst it is important to address a student’s literacy gaps as early as possible, we have also had some great success stories with older students heading into, or already in, high school, so I’d like parents to know that it’s never too late to start rebuilding the foundations of your child’s literacy.
